Eclipses in Astrology.

The significance of eclipses is often exaggerated in some astrological sources as a nod to traditional astrology. However, for the modern professional astrologer, it represents just one of many celestial events, similar to planetary ingressions or aspects. An eclipse can become astrologically significant under specific circumstances or in a particular chart. Generally, though, we experience at least four eclipses annually with little noticeable effect on individual life. Let’s examine them more closely.

A lunar eclipse occurs at the full moon when Earth’s shadow falls on the moon, blocking sunlight. It happens when Earth aligns between the sun and the moon. Conversely, a solar eclipse occurs at the new moon, with the moon positioned between Earth and the sun, preventing sunlight from reaching it. Lunar and solar eclipses always take place within two weeks of each other. Although there are various types of eclipses, their astronomical interest does not always translate to significant astrological importance, though some astrologers do consider these distinctions in their practices.

There is a minimum of four and a maximum of seven eclipses annually. Most years witness two solar and two lunar eclipses. Fewer years record five or six eclipses (like 2020), and only a select few experience seven. The 20th century saw several years with seven eclipses: 1908, 1917, 1935, 1973, and 1982. In comparison, the 19th century featured only three such years, while the 18th and 17th centuries had only one each. In the 21st century, the years 2038 and 2094 are expected to have seven eclipses each.

Each eclipse is part of the Saros cycle, lasting about 18 years. Eclipses of the same Saros cycle share characteristics and repeat in a similar sequence, with each cycle contributing to a Saros series lasting between 1226 and 1550 years. There are about forty different Saros series in progress at any given time.

Historically, eclipses were often viewed with a sense of fatalism and negativity in astrology. This perception was often connected with the symbolic nature of the event that marks the natural end of one cycle and the beginning of another, facilitating necessary transformations. The fact that ancient astrology was predominantly mundane – used in geopolitical and governmental forecasts, added to the perception because major shifts on that level would often bring unrest.

In modern individual astrology, the symbolic meaning of an eclipse is similar but does not inherently carry a negative connotation; it merely marks the end and the beginning of certain cycles. While these transitions can sometimes be unexpected or undesired, they are a natural part of life. Although cycles form the fabric of life, not all significantly impact us. An eclipse may signify potential energy shifts, mood changes, and sometimes tension, yet its influence often goes unnoticed unless it resonates with an individual’s natal chart. In such instances, its transformative power can manifest through significant life events ultimately aimed at personal growth. If an individual is intentionally prepared and anticipates the changes an eclipse might bring, it can provide relief; however, if unprepared – the crisis might be due.

Nonetheless, it is crucial to remember that an eclipse does not create anything new; it merely illuminates aspects that already existed but were either unnoticed or deliberately ignored. It brings to the forefront the areas of life that need change; issues that require attention, questions that demand answers, and problems that need resolution. Often, events that occur under the influence of an eclipse are simply the logical progression and conclusion of existing patterns.

A lunar eclipse tends to exert a stronger effect on the inner world of an individual. It can elevate emotions, provoke drastic mood swings, and intensify reactions. During this time, people often find themselves less able to process their emotions effectively, frequently experiencing confusion, mixed feelings, and a diminished capacity for self-control. The optimal approach during the lunar eclipse period involves mindful consideration of one’s emotions and intuitive reactions—acknowledging them without immediate action. Calm observation of oneself and others can illuminate areas of life that require attention and reorganization. This can lead to a shift in perspectives or positions and foster conscious change once the emotional turbulence subsides.

A solar eclipse predominantly influences the external context surrounding an individual, introducing unplanned events and new circumstances. Such periods may catalyse revisions in consciousness and prompt individuals to devise new methods and strategies for dealing with various situations. Often during these times, people might find themselves unexpectedly entangled in new scenarios, not by choice but by circumstance. The suitable practice during a solar eclipse is to adopt an analytical and reflective outlook on life. This involves resisting impulsive reactions to external forces, developing new ideas, recognizing true desires, and formulating new plans. Similar to the period of a lunar eclipse, it is preferable to dedicate this time to theoretical exploration, postponing concrete actions and decisions until a more stable period ensues.

The significance of any specific eclipse for an individual depends on multiple factors. By examining its alignment in the person’s natal chart, it is possible to discern whether a particular eclipse will bring any impact and if yes, which aspects of life are likely to undergo transformation.

At the time of the eclipse, its effects may manifest distinctly, emerge subtly as preliminary indications of future changes, or remain concealed, only becoming apparent as subsequent developments unfold. Typically, the consequences of an eclipse are fully realized over six months, with significant developments often observed in three months. However, depending on the specific cycle and characteristics of the eclipse, the timing and extent of its impact can vary.

Overall, an eclipse strongly connected to an individual’s natal chart carries the potential for profound transformation and change. Conversely, an eclipse with no significant links to the chart is likely to remain unnoticed. The atmosphere during an eclipse may feel unusually charged, reflecting the varied reactions it may elicit across different astrological charts. The widespread caution advised during eclipse periods derives from this variability, as one can’t always be aware of how the eclipse is reflected in the charts of other individuals. However, with a mindful, responsible, and reflective approach, navigating an eclipse period should not be difficult.
